NEC PA500U

 NEC PA500U
NEC's PA500U is clearly made for serious users. Designed for permanent mounting in a theatre or boardroom, the PA500U comes as a separate projector and lens combination.

Rated at 5000 lumens, it's very bright and can display an image of up to 12.7m (500in) at 1920 x 1080 resolution -enough for almost any business or home theatre application.

Connection to our Mac took seconds. There are connections for up to three computers with VGA, HDMI, DispiayPort. S-Video. component and RCA connections and multiple audio inputs. Our only issue with the connectivity options was that there's only one HDMI port. That's easily remedied in a professional installation by an HDMI splitter.

Installation will require some professional assistance. The PA500U is best roof mounted, and at a hefty 8kg that will require a robust bracket system.

The PA500U can be placed at up to 20m from the screen. That's a good thing as the projector is quite loud, but that's not a significant issue as the projector is designed to be mounted well away from users.

Image quality was outstanding. Movies, presentations and photos all displayed with rich colours. There are integrated speakers that are good enough for business sound but barely adequate for movies. However, integrated with a sound system, The PA500U would make a great centrepiece for a home theatre or boardroom system.

As is the case with many new projectors, the PA500U can be connected to a network. However, the ability to remotely display content over a wired or wireless LAN is limited to Windows systems. Windows 7 supports network projectors out of the box - something that OS X doesn't yet do.
